I first got the idea for this website when I realized how many people—friends, relatives, fellow travel writers and others—had asked me for advice on renting an apartment or house abroad. This shelter option has long been popular in Europe, where it's often known as self-catering accommodation. But aside from beach and ski condos, it's a bit of a mystery to many North Americans.

Aside from apartment rentals, there are so many other ways to travel that take you beyond hotels and tour buses: home swaps, greeter programs and more. Did you know, for instance, that hospitality clubs match adventurous travellers with their counterparts around the world, so that they can offer each other a free (or very inexpensive) place to sleep for a night or two?
